Women in science we admire

Hypatia

Hypatia nominated by Ross Corkrey

Hypatia, one of last academics at Alexandria, a woman defiantly teaching science and literature, at a time when intellectual freedom was about to end. That she merely held her position at that time is extraordinary. Unfortunately, her works in philosophy, astronomy and mathematics have not survived, except in reputation, but we can gauge their worth in the impression they left on her contemporaries. She was murdered by religious fanatics.
